Gilbert Gottfried was canned for his tasteless Twitter jokes about the tragedy in Japan.

Gilbert Gottfried's quacks just cost him his job.

The nasal comedian was fired from his trademark role as the voice of the Aflac duck on Monday after making tasteless jokes about the tragedy in Japan on his Twitter account.

"Gilbert's recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac," Michael Zuna, a senior VP and chief marketing officer for the company, said in a statement Monday. "Aflac Japan - and, by extension, Japan itself - is part of the Aflac family, and there is no place for anything but compassion and concern during these difficult times."

Aflac, which calls itself Japan's No. 1 insurer, does three-quarters of its business in the country which has been rocked by an earthquake, tsunami and the threat of harmful nuclear radiation.

The company donated 100 million yen - roughly $1.2 million - to the International Red Cross to aid the country's recovery efforts on Friday.

Gottfried tweeted the offending jokes on Saturday and Sunday.

"I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, 'They'll be another one floating by any minute now,' Gottfried, 56, he wrote.

He later added, "What does every Japanese person have in their apartment? Flood lights."

Despite negative feedback, he continued to post jokes throughout the weekend.

"Japan called me. They said 'maybe those jokes are a hit in the US, but over here, they're all sinking," he wrote.

Gottfried, whose signature sharp voice was featured in the commercials for over ten years, will soon be replaced.

"Aflac will immediately set plans in motion to conduct a nationwide casting call to find a new voice of the iconic Aflac Duck," the company announced on Monday. "It should be noted that Gilbert Gottfried is not the voice of the Aflac Duck in Japan."
